LMU Tennis Does Well At Bulldog Bash

BARBOURVILLE, KY, - Over the weekend, members of the Lincoln Memorial University men's and women's tennis teams participated in the 2010 Bulldog Bash hosted by Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky.
Although the tournament is considered to be an individual event and no team scores are relevant, numerous members of the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter tennis teams participated for the second consecutive year in the annual event, along with players from Shorter College, Lindsay Wilson College and Union College.
From the men's side, LMU sophomore Philipp Hoffmann (Karlsruhe, Germany) and junior Tom Goossens (Moerbeke-Wass, Belgium) picked up where they left off at the end of the 2010 spring season by winning the Bulldog Bash doubles championship. The pair defeated of Nicolas Ernst and Pierre Vernin 3-6, 7-6, 7-4 (tie breaker) and 11-0 (super tie breaker) en route to the championship.
Hoffmann also did well in singles play, posting three wins to make the semifinals before losing to Union's Yvon Haessig 3-6, 4-6.
In women's play, the Lady Railsplitters had a strong showing from sophomore Leah Donoff (Tipp City, OH) who made it to the semifinals in singles before losing to Shorter College's Candace Laurent 3-6, 4-6. Newcomers Aura Penalosa (Bogota, Colombia) and Shena Joseph (Miramar, FL) each earned trips to the finals of the back draw bracket. In that match, Joseph defeated teammate Penalosa 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 in the super tie breaker for the win.
In women's doubles play, LMU junior Sofia Lopez Mimendi (Mexico City, Mexico) and Donoff battled their way to the semifinals before falling to Lindsey Wilson's Trina Slapeka and Slavica Milanovic 5-7, 0-6.
This weekend, members the Lincoln Memorial University men's and women's tennis teams will travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to compete in the East Tennessee State University Fall Classic. The tournament is set for September 17th-18th. No start time has been given as of this date.
