Railsplitters Battle Lees-McRae To A 1-1 Draw
October 5, 2010
HARROGATE, TN -- The Lincoln Memorial University soccer team fought valiantly against a strong and talented Lees-McRae team Tuesday afternoon, finishing with a 1-1 tie.
After a methodical start for both teams, the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College scored first. At the twenty-two minute mark, Lees-McRae was granted a penalty kick following a foul in the box by a Lincoln Memorial defender. Forward Lee Squires attempted the penalty kick and found the net, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Bobcats.
In the closing minutes of the half, Lincoln Memorial brought the score back to even. Nearing the forty-minute mark, sophomore midfielder Fernando Silveira attempted a shot which was deflected by a Bobcat defender, sending the ball into the air. Senior defender Lucas Pereira made a dazzling play on the deflection as he leapt into the air and placed a header into the back of the net. With the goal, the Railsplitters tied the game at 1-1.
The second half saw a defensive battle ensue as neither team was able to score. Each team's offense was stymied by the physical defensive play of the opposition. Regulation ended at a 1-1 tie.
In the two ten-minute periods allowed for overtime, each team was limited to very few offensive opportunities. As a result of this, Lincoln Memorial and Lees-McRae finished in a 1-1 tie with blanketing defenses shining throughout the match.
With the tie, the Railsplitters move to 6-2-1 on the season. They will now turn their attention to another all-important South Atlantic Conference match, as Lenoir-Rhyne will come to town on Saturday, October 9th. That match has an approximate start time of 4:30 p.m.
