Railsplitters Axe Lenoir-Rhyne 2-0
October 9, 2010
HARROGATE, TN -- The Railsplitter soccer team hosted South Atlantic Conference foe Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday afternoon and promptly defeated the Bears, 2-0.
Lincoln Memorial struck quickly in the match, as freshman midfielder Fabio Costa planted the ball into the net at the twenty-three minute mark. He was assisted on the play by senior defender Lucas Pereira, who won the battle for the ball in front of the net. This gave LMU a 1-0 advantage.
The Railsplitters' second goal came in the 60th minute in unusual fashion. Freshman midfielder Jose Moreno sent a cross towards the front of the goal. The Lenoir-Rhyne keeper made a play on the ball, only to stumble and fall across the plane, giving LMU a goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Lincoln Memorial defense was able to hold on to that lead, due in large part to the stellar efforts of Lucas Pereira and junior goalkeeper Michael Watkins. LMU finished the match with a 2-0 win.
With the win, LMU improves to 3-1 in the South Atlantic Conference and 7-2-1 overall. They will hit the field again on October 12th, as they will be on the road to take on Ashbury College. That match has an approximate start time of 7 p.m.
