SALISBURY, NC -- Lucas Pereira scored just before the half to lift visiting Lincoln Memorial University to a 1-0 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The Railsplitters improve to 8-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 7-6-1 and 1-5.
In a physical battle that featured 35 fouls and nine cards, the Railsplitters notched the lone goal following a corner kick. After the corner was cleared out, Fernando Silveira sent a cross back into the box that Pereira was able to head in at the 42:45 mark.
Catawba held a 9-8 edge in shots in the second half, but could not break through. The best chance came early in the second half when a shot by Carson Smith was blocked and a follow shot by Corey Faughnan was saved. On the save by Michael Watkins the rebound fell to Ezra Ntirugelegwa, who fired over the bar from short range.
Watkins collected six saves for the Railsplitters. Catawba keeper Luke McCarthy made seven stops. Newberry was whistled for 21 fouls to just six for the Indians.
