Railsplitters Pick Up 3-1 Win Over Mars Hill
October 27, 2010
HARROGATE, TN -- The Lincoln Memorial University soccer team defeated the Lions of Mars Hill College 3-1 in impressive fashion Wednesday afternoon.
In the first forty minutes of play, the game was dominated by the defenses of each team. However, sophomore forward Mackenzie Wilde was able to break the game open, putting a chip shot into the back of the net in the 40th minute. He was assisted on the play by sophomore midfielder Fernando Silveira, giving LMU a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half of play.
Lincoln Memorial added to their lead at the fifty-six minute mark, as sophomore midfielder Chris Nash knocked in an easy goal. Junior defender Tom Clark provided the assist, as he followed a save by the Mars Hill keeper, placing the ball directly in front of the net for Nash to drive home. That gave the Railsplitters a 2-0 lead.
As the game waned into the final minutes, the Lions of Mars Hill took an aggressive offensive approach to bring attempt to work back into the match. In the 77th minute, midfielder Ishaiah Schafer gave the Lions a goal off the pass by Friddy Hoegener.
With the score at 2-1 in favor of LMU, junior goalkeeper Michael Watkins made the play of the game. MHC was on the attack and Friddy Hoegener sent a booming kick towards the Railsplitter goal. Despite playing with an injured shoulder which has limited his practice time, Watkins made a brilliant play, sprawling for the shot and deflecting the potential game-tying goal. This play swung the momentum back to the Railsplitters side.
Lincoln Memorial added another goal in the 86th minute, as Fernando Silveira scored a breath-taking goal. From beyond thirty yards, Silveira sent a perfectly placed lob shot over the Mars Hill keeper, giving LMU a 3-1 lead, which would conclude the match.
With the win, the Railsplitters move to 6-2 in South Atlantic Conference play and 10-4-1 overall while Mars Hill falls to 11-4-1, 5-3-1 in the SAC. LMU will take the field again on Saturday, October 30th, as Wingate comes to town for the final regular season match of the season. That match has a scheduled start time of 4 p.m.
