LMU Falls At Lenoir-Rhyne On Overtime Buzzer-Beater 74-73
January 22, 2011
HICKORY, NC -- A shot at the buzzer at the end of the first overtime enabled the homestanding Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne escape the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team 74-73 Saturday evening.
With the win, Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 8-8 and 5-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. LMU falls to 8-8, 3-5 in the SAC with the loss.
LMU shot out to the quick 9-2 lead before L-R went on a 9-0 run to take the lead themselves with 11:01 to go in the half. The teams then swapped the lead several times before free throws enabled the Bears to pull ahead late in the half. A lay-up as time expired by LMU's Whitney Holmes cut the L-R halftime lead to 22-21.
The second half started off almost the same as the first as LMU pulled out to a six point lead only to see L-R quickly come back. LMU then went on a tear and pulled out to a 53-45 lead with 7:54 to go in the game. Lenoir-Rhyne took control of the boards and used offensive rebounding to come back and eventually take a 64-63 lead with :35 left. LMU's Destiny Williams then found Carrie Ann Harris open on the perimeter and she buried the three-pointer to put LMU up 66-63 with 26 seconds to go. L-R missed a three-pointer of their own and immediately fouled once LMU grabbed the rebound. Both free throws were missed and the Bears' Cameron Sealy hit a jumper as time expired to send the game to overtime.
Playing without their top two scorers, who had fouled out in regulation, LMU pulled out to the 73-70 lead when Chelsea Craig hit both free throws with 1:47 left. L-R then had four chances and four offensive rebounds before Alexis Katt cut the lead to one, 73-72, with 1:29 remaining. It looked like the Lady Railsplitters were going to pull out the win when they grabbed a rebound with 2.6 seconds left, but L-Rs Whitley Cutler managed to tie up the ball with the possession arrow going L-Rs way. They inbounded the ball on a backscreen and Whitney Brinkley's lay-up fell in as time expired, giving the Bears the win.
LMU was led in the loss by Craig's 15 points. Patrice Talley and Dayshalee Salaman each scored 12 and Williams added in ten points. Whitney Holmes led LMU on the boards with nine.
L-R was led by Sealy's 20 points. Brinkley had 13 and Katt added in 12.
LMU will travel across Clinch Mountain to face arch-rival Carson-Newman Wednesday at 6 p.m. Those wishing to catch all the action online can find links to live stats, radio and other multimedia at LMURailsplitters.com.
