Railsplitters Tie 21st-ranked Montevallo 0-0
October 11, 2011
HARROGATE, TN -- The Lincoln Memorial University soccer team and the 21st-ranked Falcons of the University of Montevallo played to a 0-0 tie Tuesday afternoon on the LMU soccer field.
This marks the first time these two schools have met since the Railsplitters defeated the Falcons in the 2007 National Semifinals to advance to the National Championship match.
With the tie, Lincoln Memorial moves to 5-3-3 on the year while Montevallo moves to 8-2-3.
The entirety of the game was marked by tremendous defensive performances by each team. The first half of play saw only nine shots combined. That number was more than doubled in the second half as Montevallo recorded 13 shots and LMU attempted nine. None of these shots resulted in a goal as regulation ended in a 0-0 tie.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Railsplitters were denied on their final and best opportunity of the game as Falcon keeper Brendan Ledgeway deflected a shot by Mario Pinto in the 107th minute.
In the match, Montevallo outshot the Railsplitters 24-17. LMU keeper Michael Watkins recorded seven saves in the game. UM keeper Brendan Ledgeway tallied five saves.
The Railsplitters will take the field again on October 15th, as the Indians of Catawba College travel to Harrogate, Tennessee for a South Atlantic Conference match. That game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
