Lady Railsplitters Steal Road Win From Newberry

Box Score

NEWBERRY, SC - The Lincoln Memorial University women's soccer team remained among the conference leaders Tuesday afternoon, as it traveled to Newberry, South Carolina and knocked off league opponent Newberry College in overtime 2-1.

Just as was the case in Saturday's win over conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne, the Lady Railsplitters knocked off Newberry in dramatic fashion.  In fact, Newberry scored the opening goal of the match only 41 seconds in when Allie Johns punched one in on a quick one-two pass from teammates Lora Moore and Michaela Peach to take a 1-0 lead.

LMU got on the scoreboard a short time later in the 22nd minute when sophomore forward Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD) stole a misplayed ball from the defender that led to a breakaway.  Thompson's goal came unassisted and tied the match at 1-1 which stood through the end of the first half.

As the second half got underway, both teams took numerous shots, with LMU putting five on frame in regulation.  LMU goalkeeper Denise de Resende (Taguatinga, Brazil) was tested only twice in the match, giving up her only the goal in the first minute while recording one save.  Newberry's Emily Rhoades saw a little more action in the net.  Rhoades made five saves in regulation before giving up the game-winning-goal in overtime.

LMU's final goal of the match came in the 98th minute when freshman Leanne Reid (Aberdeen, Scotland) received a cross from Thompson in front of the goal which was deflected off her body and into the net.  The goal brought a sudden end to the match, giving the Lady Railsplitters the victory and going down in the record books as the LMU women's third overtime win of the season.

Now 10-1-1 on the year, the Lady Railsplitters are 3-1 in conference play and are tied with Carson-Newman College for second place in the South Atlantic Conference race.  This Sunday the Lady Railsplitters play host to regional powerhouse Georgia College & State University at home.  Sunday's match is a non-conference bout and gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
