December 19, 2008
HARROGATE, TN - Lincoln Memorial University Head Tennis Coach Benny Collins announced Friday morning the addition of Tom Goossens to the 2009 Spring roster.
Goossen, a 6'0" incoming freshman from Ledestraat, Belgium will join a Railsplitter men's tennis squad that returns two All-South Atlantic Conference performers in Hannes Ganss and Bastian Guenther both of Erlangen, Germany. "Tom will add lots of firepower to the lineup for the upcoming spring season," says Collins. Also returing will be Andras Pauko (Budapest Hungary), Andrew Bates (Walton, KY), Gabor Heredi-Szabo (Kecksemet, Hungary), Zack Jones (Murfreesboro, TN) Cody Swindall (Clintwood, VA) and Corbett Smith (Tazewell, TN).
Goosen comes to the Railsplitter program from Sint Laurens ASO and is said to possess a strong backhand, a great serve and is able to understand the game very well and will be a real fighter says Collins. "Tom is a very solid baseline player," says Collins. "He comes to the net when the opportunity rises and terminates the point. He will be a solid singles player and an assett in doubles."
Although the 2009 spring schedule doesn't get underway until February 4, Goosen will report to campus January 5 for spring semester classes. The Railsplitters open the 2009 schedule in Williamsburg, Kentucky against the University of the Cumberlands at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
