LMU Softball Splits With University Of The Cumberlands
February 13, 2009
HARROGATE, TN - The Lincoln Memorial University softball team moved its season record to 3-3 Friday evening with a double-header split against southeastern Kentucky opponent University of the Cumberlands. The Patriots knocked off the Lady Railsplitters 5-4 in the first game, but LMU avenged the loss in game-two by defeating the University of the Cumberlands 6-0.
Hitting was most of the problem throughout the first game however, two LMU errors didn't help the Lady Railsplitter cause any. LMU hacked out only seven hits in the first game, one of which was a triple by Ashley Knight (Palm Harbor, FL) and the biggest, a three-run blast by Mira McPeek (Westerville, OH) in the bottom of the seventh inning. Despite the late comeback, the Lady Railsplitters fell short as they dropped a 5-4 decision to the Patriots.
Friday's loss went to LMU freshman pitcher Brooklynn Jimison (Harrogate, TN). Jimison pitched the first three innings for the Lady Railsplitters, allowing four hits, three runs and three earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts. In the fourth inning, teammate Chelley Christian (Kingsport, TN) entered and pitched the next two innings. Christian gave up on only one hit and one earned run with a walk. Freshman Kris Landenburg (Canal Winchester, OH) closed in the loss. Landenburg also pitched two innings, allowing three hits, one run and no earned runs with one walk and no strikeouts.
The Lady Railsplitters jumped on University of the Cumberlands early in the second game. The LMU damage came in the first, second and fourth innings. The offensive barrage was sparked by 13 hits at the plate including a double by Sara Henn (Kettering, OH) and a three-run blast by Bridget Eicher (Hicksville, OH). Henn and Eicher combined for all six LMU RBI in the 6-0 win over the Patriots.
LMU's Brittany Stuive (Portland, TX) picked up the victory in the second game to improve to 2-0 on the year. Stuive pitched five innings of shutout softball and allowed only three hits, while recording one strikeout before giving way to Jimison. Jimison closed the door over the last two innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Now 3-3 on the year, the Lady Railsplitters will use the next week to prepare for their next home series with Urbana College. LMU and Urbana will square off in a four game series with two games being played on Saturday February 21 at 1:00 p.m. and the final two games of the weekend set for Sunday February 22 also at 1:00 o'clock.
