Softball Drops Two At Virginia-Wise

WISE, VA -- The homestanding Lady Cavs of UVa-Wise out-hit LMU 14-6 to pull out the doubleheader sweep of the Lady Railsplitters 2-1 and 7-1 Sunday afternoon.
Sara Henn and Bridget Eicher accounted for LMU's two runs on the afternoon. Henn hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning of game one and Eicher scored on a single by Jackie Adams to right center in the fifth inning of game two.
Game one saw the Lady Cavs score early as Maddi Ridenour scored on a Lady Railsplitter error in the bottom of the first. In the next inning Uva-Wise added what turned out to be the winning run as Ashlee Washburn hit one over the right center fence to put the Lady Cavs up 2-1.
Henn would then score LMU's lone run with her homer in the fifth.
Pitcher Brittany Stuive (7-5) went the distance for LMU, giving up two runs off of four hits. UVa-Wise's Lauren Snead (11-4) picked up the win for the Lady Cavs, giving up the lone run off of two hits and throwing ten strikeouts.
The second game was similar to the first with UVa-Wise striking in the first inning when Britney Lawson hit a two-run homer to right center. The Lady Cavs would add three more runs in the third when Lawson hit her second consecutive home run of the game with a 3 RBI slam to right center.
LMU got on the board in the fifth when Eicher singled to shortstop. Michelle Breen then reached on an UVA-Wise error that moved Eicher over to second. Adams then drove in Eicher with a single to right center.
UVA-Wise then picked up two more runs by Lawson and Washburn in the fifth to pick up the 7-1 win.
Chelley Christian (0-1) picked up the loss for the Lady Railsplitters. Christian gave up five runs off of five hits in three innings of work. Kris Landenburg pitched the last three innings for the Lady Railsplitters, giving up two runs off of five hits. Megan McCoy (8-6) picked up the win for the Lady Cavs, giving up one run and four hits while striking out three on the afternoon.
The Lady Railsplitters (14-18) will return to South Atlantic Conference play as they host Brevard on Wednesday and Mars Hill on Saturday.
UVA-Wise (19-11) will host Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Milligan College on Tuesday.
