Own Goal Knocks Railsplitters Out Of 2009 SAC Tournament
November 3, 2009
BARBOURVILLE, KY - The no. 6 seed Lions Mars Hill College ousted the no. 3 seed Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University 1-0 Tuesday afternoon in the Quarterfinals of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
Mars Hill's fortune and LMU's demise occurred when a Railsplitter defender headed a ball back to the keeper in the 31st minute of the match. The play of the ball caught Railsplitter keeper Michael Watkins out of position and despite Watkin's best efforts to make the save, the ball trickled into the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead on the "own goal."
After taking the advantage into the intermission, the Lions and the Railsplitters each have numerous denied scoring opportunities in the second half but neither could convert those opportunities into a goal and no. 6 seed Mars Hill emerged with the 1-0 upset win over no. 3 Lincoln Memorial University.
The Railsplitters end the season with a 10-5-1 overall record, while it's on to the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournnament Semifinals in Rock Hill, South Carolina for the Lions of Mars Hill College. The Lions will boast a 7-7-4 record when they make their first men's soccer semifinal appearance in recent memory. Friday's opening play of the semifinals gets underway at 3:00 p.m. in Rock Hill.
