Softball Splits SAC Series With Tusculum

Brittany Stuive makes the play at first. Photo by Allen EarlHARROGATE, TN -- The LMU softball team and Tusculum split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
Tusculum (7-11, 1-3 SAC) won the first game 1-0 in nine innings while LMU (21-9, 1-3 SAC) took game two 3-2.
LMU will host Newberry in a SAC series this Saturday.
GAME ONE: Tusculum 1, LMU 0 (nine innings)
The first game was a pitchers duel with both teams not giving up a hit until the later innings.
The Lady Railsplitters had a chance to score in the bottom of the sixth when Brittany Stuive hit the single through the right side and Cierra Mudd tried to score from third, but she was gunned down at the plate.
LMU had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth with no outs but the Tusculum defense stiffened and held off the Lady Railsplitters to take the game to the ninth inning.
Tusculum got the lone run of the game across in the top of the ninth when base-runner Brittany Hunley scored on a RBI single to left center by Racheal Wilburn.
Holli Cadenhead (5-4) won the battle of the pitchers, going the full nine innings and giving up four hits with five strikeouts.
Meghan LaFevor (12-4) takes the loss as she gave up five hits while striking out six in nine innings of work.

GAME TWO: LMU 3, Tusculum 2
Tusculum scored first in the second inning as Shanda Kimbrough crossed the plate from third off the RBI groundout from Tasha Morrell.
Kimbrough returned the favor in the third as she hit an RBI single through the left side that scored Taylor MacDonald and put Tusculum up 2-0.
Meghan LaFevor cut the lead to one in the fourth inning as she scored on Ashley Legge's sacrifice fly.
With two out in the bottom of the seventh and Tusculum up 2-1, LMU's Brittany Stuive singled to right field. Chelley Christian then hit a single through the right side that was mis-handled and went back to the wall. Stuive and Christian both scored to give LMU the 3-2 win.
Cierra Mudd (7-4) got the win for the Lady Railsplitters. Mudd threw a complete game, giving up five hits and struck out two batters.
Tusculum's Eric Searcy (2-5) took the loss, only giving up one earned run and four hits in six and two-thirds innings of work.
