April 13, 2010
ETOWAH, NC - Railsplitter golfers took three of the top-5 individual spots at the Independent College Invitational Golf Tournament held at Etowah Valley Country Club in Etowah, North Carolina on Monday and Tuesday to help the Lincoln Memorial University men's golf team finish second among the field of six teams participating.
On Monday, the Railsplitters turned in a combined team score of 306 to place second after the first day's play behind North Greenville University. Although the Railsplitters turned in the best team score of the day on Tuesday with a 294, the effort wasn't enough to overcome Monday's opening round by North Greenville and the Crusaders were able to hold on for the tournament win by posting a two-day score of 592 for the tournament. LMU finished just eight strokes off that pace with a team score of 600 to take second place, while Brevard College (634) was third, Mars Hill College (651) was fourth, North Carolina Central (655) placed fifth and Winston-Salem State was sixth with a 659.
North Greenville University's Andrew Beck and Brad Caldwell took the top-2 spots respectively to lead the Crusader's charge however, LMU golfers Josh Collins, Eric Kennedy and Josh Cornett finished third, fourth and tied for fifth to carry the Railsplitter attack.
Collins turned in rounds of 74 and 72 for a two-day total 146, which put him in third place while teammate Eric Kennedy shot rounds of 79 and 71 for a two-day score of 150 for fourth place. Josh Cornett had scores of 75 and 76 to finish tied for fifth with a 151.
The Railsplitters now have until April 19-20 to prepare for the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship which will be played on the same Etowah Valley Country Club course in Etowah, North Carolina.
