Lady Railsplitters Take 4th In SAC Women's Golf Tournament

ETOWAH, NC - The Lincoln Memorial University women's golf team captured a 4th place finish at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Championship held Monday and Tuesday at Etowah Valley Country Club in Etowah, North Carolina.
The Lady Railsplitters shot a two-day total 988 to finish behind Champion Newberry College (923), second place finisher, Carson-Newman College (941) and the Bulldogs of Wingate University who shot a combined team score of 984 to finish third.
The LMU women went toe-to-toe with league opponent Catawba College in the final round by shooting a team score of 330 but edged the Catawba Indians by two strokes to take 4th while CC finished 5th with a score of 990. Tusculum College placed 6th (1004) while Lenoir-Rhyne University(1011) placed 7th and Mars Hill College (1078) rounded out the field of eight teams participating.
The Lady Railsplitters' Chelsea Boshears led the charge for LMU, shooting a pair of 83's and a 79 for a three-round total score of 245 to take 15th place overall. Brittany McCown finished the two-day event tied for 16th place with scores of 79, 82 and 85 for a combined score of 246, while Kirsten Wolff finished the tournament tied for 20th place with rounds of 81, 83 and 85 for a total event score of 249.
LMU's Maria Stapleton turned in scores of 85, 86 and 81 for a two-day total of 252 to tie for 24th place while teammate Desta Coaker shot rounds of 81, 86 and 92 for a final or 259 to finish tied for 30th place.
"The women's team played really well," said LMU Head Coach Travis Muncy. "They finished four strokes out of third place and struggled a little in the rainy conditions but all the girls peaked at different times throughtout the tournament and their scores counted at some point in the event. We are a very young team and I feel with another year of experience, we will be one of the top teams in the conference next year and could be a contender for a conference title."
The Lady Railsplitters had fourth top-5 finishes during the 2009-10 season regular and post-seasons including Tuesday's finish in the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Tournament. With two juniors, two sophomores and four freshman, next year's Lady Railsplitter golf team may be looking a its best season ever.
