HARROGATE, Tenn. -- As the end of the year approaches, the Lincoln Memorial University athletics department is counting down the top 20 moments of 2015. Breaking in at No. 16 is the baseball team's dramatic doubleheader sweep at Carson-Newman.
Â
The Railsplitters arrived in Jefferson City on March 7 looking to keep the good times rolling while riding a six-game winning streak that included a three-game sweep of No. 23 Lenoir-Rhyne.
Â
Things appeared bleak in game one, as Lincoln Memorial fell behind 5-3 following Evan Jurjevic's solo home run in the top of the eighth. The Railsplitters rallied, though, scrounging up two runs on
Ryan Burlison's RBI single and
Jean Rodriguez's (Caguas, Puerto Rico) run-scoring fielder's choice. With the game knotted at 5-5, Lincoln Memorial loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but came up empty-handed to send the game into extra innings.
Â
Carson-Newman would regain the lead in the top of the 13th inning on Bryan Everhart's RBI single and threatened to do further damage until reliever
Nick Morabito stranded runners on first and second to keep the deficit at 6-5. The Railsplitters were down to their last out in the bottom of the 13th when
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) pummeled a game-tying home run over the right-field wall. Lincoln Memorial then caught a break, as
Scott Miller struck out but reached safely on a passed ball. Following a walk,
Kyle Floyd provided the walk-off win by slashing an RBI double into the gap in right center.
Â
It's hard to imagine a win being more dramatic than the one the Railsplitters pulled out in game one, but game two made a strong case.
Â
Lincoln Memorial found itself trailing 5-0 after three innings, but used solo shots by
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Rodriguez, as well as an RBI single from
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) to close the gap to 5-3 at the end of five.
Â
A groundout and a fly out left LMU with only four outs to stave off defeat, but they found a way to get it done. A bunt single coupled with a wild pitch put Rodriguez in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, and he scored on an error by the Carson-Newman second baseman. That error proved costly to Carson-Newman's cause, too, as Miller slammed a two-run, game-winning home run in the next at-bat to put the Railsplitters ahead 6-5.
Â
Burlison then stranded the potential game-tying run at third base by striking out Cody Fox and forcing Brandon Roberts into a fly out to end the come-from-behind victory.
Â
The Railsplitters finished the doubleheader sweep of Carson-Newman with 23 hits and four home runs. The 13-inning marathon in game one proved to be the program's longest game since March 9, 2013. And to sweeten the deal, the Railsplitters went on the beat Carson-Newman 16-5 in the third and final game of the series to extend their winning streak to nine games, which was the program's longest winning streak since 2009.
