Men's Golf slides to 17th place after round two of NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- The Railsplitters stumbled in round two of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Regional, shooting a 23-over par 311 to slip four spots to 17th place on Tuesday at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills, Florida. At the end of the 54-hole regional tournament, the top-five teams and the top-two individuals not affiliated with either of those teams advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Combined with Monday's 306, Lincoln Memorial is alone in 17th place in the 20-team tournament with a 41-over par total of 617. Lynn overtook round-one leader West Florida for the 36-hole lead, as the Knights are sitting at two-under par with a two-round total of 574. West Florida is a shot back of Lynn and in second place with a one-under par total of 575, while Florida Southern is in third place at 577 (+1). St. Leo fired the low round of the day, jumping six spots to fourth place with an eight-under par 280. Columbus State is barely holding onto the fifth-place spot with a 12-over par total of 588, which is a shot ahead of both Barry and Nova Southeastern.

Senior Connor Froning (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior George Duncan (Dumbartonshire, Scotland) carded the low rounds of the day for the Railsplitters with four-over par 76s.

Froning opened his round with back-to-back birdies before giving three strokes back with a bogey at the fourth hole and a double bogey at the seventh. But he got back to even par with a birdie on the ninth hole. However, the Knoxville, Tennessee native bogied four straight holes to open the back nine before finishing with five consecutive pars. Froning is now tied for 70th place.

Duncan carded a one-over par 36 on the front nine, mixing a pair of birdies with three bogies, but the All-SAC honorable mention selection went birdie-less over his last 10 holes while making a double bogey at the par-three 15th hole to shoot a 40 on the back nine. Duncan sits in a tie for 61st place with a 10-over par total of 154.

Freshman Sam Broadhurst (Nuneaton, England) birdied his first hole, but would not record another birdie in his round en route to shooting a seven-over par 79. The SAC Freshman of the Year played a relatively clean back nine, though, with two bogies and seven pars, as Broadhurst now sits in a tie for 70th place.

Senior Cody Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot an eight-over par 80 to slip into a tie for 55th place with a nine-over par total of 153. The Walters State Community College transfer and All-SAC second team pick birdied the third hole to get to one-under par in his round, but went through a stretch on the back nine that included three straight bogies and a triple bogey to reach his 80.

Junior Kurtis Campbell (Saint Lazare, Quebec) got off to a rocky start again in round two, making a bogey at the first hole and a triple bogey at the second to shoot a nine-over par 81. Campbell played well down the stretch, though, finishing his last four holes with three pars and a birdie at the 16th.

West Florida's Chandler Blanchet and Lynn's Manuel Torres held steady atop the individual leaderboard, as that pair followed up Monday's 65 with a one-under par 71s. Those two are sitting at eight-under par for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Florida Southern's John Coultas, who posted a four-under par 68 on Tuesday.
